The Critical Missing Piece of Serviceability

Monitoring is a race to find problems before applications, servers, or websites go down and before they impact users or the business. Traditionally, this includes three pillars of serviceability—metrics, traces, and logs.

Together, these capabilities combined provide a high level of internal visibility into the depths of cloud applications and infrastructure.

Looking from inside out
What are we missing? Is this the root cause? We need monitoring :(

Metrics, traces, and logs provide an essential view of the internal systems’ health, but that view is not complete. It misses how users are experiencing the system outside. Fundamentally, if the application can’t be used, it doesn’t matter if metrics appear good or outage alerts are absent.

The user experience of an application can only be understood if monitoring is extended to include outside the application. What’s not known cannot be improved, so internal and external monitoring are critical to visibility and enabling teams to provide stable, controlled environments.

Ultimately, this leads to regular and rapid innovation. Let’s take a closer look—from the inside out—at users-metrics-traces-logs.
